Wet weather in Chile intensified on May 11, causing heavy flooding through May 14. Following catastrophic floods, it has been reported that two people have died and over 2,000 people were forced to leave their homes. Several cars and other vehicles in Chañaral have been damaged on the waterlogged streets as a result of the Salado River banks overflowing into the town.
