National Reconnaissance Office Signs Contract with Planet Federal

News

Planet Labs Federal Inc. (Planet Federal), a wholly owned subsidiary of Planet Labs Inc. (Planet) today announced that they have signed a contract with the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), a member of the United States Intelligence Community and an agency of the United States Department of Defense. Planet established Planet Federal in order to enable deeper engagements with the US Federal Government. Planet designs, builds and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history with 140 currently in orbit.

Through this studies and demonstrations contract, the NRO and Planet will work together to better understand Planet’s current and emerging commercial imagery systems capabilities as they relate to national security needs today and tomorrow.

“We’re excited that Planet’s data can help further the NRO’s strategy of embracing commercial imagery in support of its customers across the U.S. Government,” says Robbie Schingler, co-founder and chief strategy officer at Planet.

“The NRO is examining how it can expand a partnership with the commercial remote sensing industry in 2020, so it’s looking into new capabilities and keeping an eye on future developments,” says Rich Leshner, Planet Federal’s executive vice president of operations. “Planet is constantly iterating and improving, so it’s great that they’re willing to explore these new capabilities with our data and tools.”

The Planet Team welcomes this deep engagement with the NRO to continue our working relationship during this strategic industry transition.
