The Khurais Oil Field added 1.2 million barrels of oil per day to Saudi Arabia’s production capacity when it came on-line in 2009. The field’s Central Production Facility, located northwest of Riyadh, separates wet crude oil into stabilized crude, sour gas, and natural gas liquids.
Despite low oil prices, Saudi Aramco announced they would move ahead with expansion plans in 2016. Construction progress—including the footprints of a new storage tank & gas oil separation plant—is evident in this satellite imagery series captured July 2016 through early 2017.
Occasional dark smoke from flaring is part of the normal operation of the facility.
